The Food and Drug Administration said Friday it's reviewing a letter it sent to Pfizer that would allow the company to offer a generic version of Viagra if it wins approval from the FDA for the brand-name drug.
The letter, which will be posted Thursday morning on the company's Web site, said Pfizer has not authorized the generic version of Viagra for use in women. The FDA said it had not approved the generic, which is still available on the market, to women.
Pfizer's letter, sent Friday, also said the FDA had received reports that Viagra was being used to treat a men's sexual disorder called "benign prostatic hyperplasia," and it had ordered the drug from multiple pharmacies.
Pfizer said Friday it's reviewing the letter. The company did not return a phone call seeking comment.
The letter was sent to Pfizer's Web site Friday evening, and its Web site posted the same afternoon. Pfizer spokeswoman Marcella Hensley said: "We are very pleased that the letter has been received. It is important that this letter remains on our Web site and remains available at our site."
Pfizer's letter is the latest effort by the company to get its FDA approved for women's oral contraceptives, which it said will be available at pharmacies across the U. S. in the fall. The agency has not said whether it will seek approval for generic Viagra for women.
According to a report by Bloomberg News, several studies showed that women who used the drug experienced an increase in the number of sexual partners in the last year. The study, which involved more than 3,000 people, showed that men who took the pill, which was approved by the FDA in 1998, had about a 15 percent greater chance of having a partner in the next five years.
The FDA said Friday that it has not approved Viagra for women, and that Pfizer's request is for a generic version.
A spokesman for Pfizer, Hank McKinnell, said Pfizer had no comment.
"We are disappointed that Pfizer is unable to obtain approval for Viagra for use in women," McKinnell said.
Pfizer's letter is being reviewed. The company, which makes Viagra, also said Friday that it had received several shipments of the drug last month.
